Tsutomu Yamazaki (山崎 努,Yamazaki Tsutomu, born 1936) is a Japanese actor. He won theBlue Ribbon Award for Best Actor in 1984 forThe Funeral andFarewell to the Ark.[1] Yamazaki is known for his roles as Goro inTampopo (1985) and Nenbutsu no Tetsu on the televisionjidaigekiHissatsu Shiokinin andShin Hissatsu Shiokinin.[2]
Yamazaki graduated fromHaiyuza Theatre Company and joined Bungakuza in 1959.[3] He made his film debut inKihachi Okamoto'sDaigaku no sanzôkutachi in 1960.[3] In 1961, he received theElan d'or Award for Newcomer of the Year.[4] In 1963, he appeared inAkira Kurosawa'sHigh and Low. He worked with Kurosawa twice more: in the director's next film, 1965'sRed Beard, then fifteen years later, inKagemusha.
In 1973, he appearedjidaigeki television dramaHissatsu Shiokinin and he played the same role inShin Hissatsu Shiokinin again in 1977.[3] He also starred in number ofJuzo Itami's films, including his role as a trucker who resemblesJohn Wayne inTampopo (1985). He co-starred inThe Ramen Girl (2008) withBrittany Murphy.[5]
He also played a supporting role inYōjirō Takita'sDepartures.[6]
