TheTryzub (Ukrainian:Тризуб,lit.'Trident') is aUkrainian paramilitary organization founded in 1993 by theCongress of Ukrainian Nationalists.[1][2][3] Its full name is theStepan Bandera All-Ukrainian Organization "Tryzub" (Всеукраїнська організація «Тризуб» імені Степана Бандери). Its main goal is to create the Ukrainian United Independent State (Українська Соборна Самостійна Держава, УССД). According to Tryzub, its enemies are "imperialism andchauvinism, fascism andcommunism, cosmopolitanism andpseudo-nationalism,totalitarianism andanarchism, any evil that seeks to parasitize the sweat and blood ofUkrainians".[4]

History

[edit]

It was created in October 1993 by theCongress of Ukrainian Nationalists.[1][2] Tryzub's leader since 2005 isDmytro Yarosh.[3] Among other important figures areTernopil's Officer Union member Eugene Fil (Євген Філь) and Ivan Suta (Іван Сута).[5] Yarosh pointed out the presence of educated theorists, namingSerhiy Kvit (Сергій Квіт) and Peter Ivanishin.[6]

Tryzub became the basis for the formation of theRight Sector, and Yarosh became the leader of the coalition.[3]

As of 5 February 2014, theInvestigative Committee of Russia claimed to have issued an international arrest warrant for Dmytro Yarosh.[7]

Name and symbols

[edit]

The termtryzub (Ukrainian:три+зуб,lit. 'tree+tooth') is the name of thecoat of arms of Ukraine. The front shape resembles atrident. Ukrainian includes the special termtryzubets (Ukrainian:тризубець [три+зубець],romanized[try+zubets' ],lit.'three+cog') for a tridentper se, the shape on the coat of arms is specifically called by a derivative termtryzub. The difference betweentryzub andtryzubets is not fully translatable in English, yet resembles the one between a trident and atrishula. While the first is more casual, the second is more symbolic.

The organization logo consists by the official description of "the Christ sword and thetryzub, like that of theOrganization of Ukrainian Nationalists".[8]
