Trull is a village,electoral ward andcivil parish inSomerset, England, situated nearTaunton. The parish, which includesDipford andStaplehay, has apopulation of 2,288.[1]
The name Trull is thought to derive from the wordTrendle meaning circle or wheel.[2]
The parish of Trull was part of theTaunton DeaneHundred.[3]
Theparish council has responsibility for local issues, including setting an annual precept (local rate) to cover the council’s operating costs.
Forlocal government purposes, since 1 April 2023, the village comes under theunitary authority ofSomerset Council. Prior to this, it was part of thenon-metropolitan district ofSomerset West and Taunton (formed on 1 April 2019) and, before this, the district ofTaunton Deane (established under theLocal Government Act 1972). From 1894-1974, for local government purposes, Trull was part ofTaunton Rural District.[4]
It is also part of theTaunton and Wellingtoncounty constituency represented in theHouse of Commons of theParliament of the United Kingdom. It elects oneMember of Parliament (MP) by thefirst past the post system of election.
All Saints’ Church has a tower dating from the 13th century; the rest is 15th-century. It was served by the monks ofTaunton Priory until 1308.[2] The east window, dating from the 15th century, depicts the crucifixion with St John and the Mother of Jesus at the foot of the Cross.[5] The pulpit is believed to date from around 1500. The building has been designated byEnglish Heritage as a Grade Ilisted building.[6]
