Species of mammals belonging to the spiny rat family of rodents
TheTrinidad spiny rat (Proechimys trinitatis[2][3]) is a species ofrodent in the familyEchimyidae. It is found inTrinidad and Tobago and northern Venezuela.
Morphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences showed thatP. trinitatus belongs to the so-calledtrinitatus group ofProechimys species, and shares closer phylogenetic affinities with the other members of this clade:P. mincae,P. guairae,P. poliopus,P. magdalenae,P. chrysaeolus,P. urichi, andP. hoplomyoides.[4][5][6][7]
