Trichoglossus is a genus oflorikeet in thePsittaculidae ortrue parrot superfamily. The genus is distributed widely throughAustralia,Wallacea andMelanesia, withoutliers in thePhilippines andMicronesia. Members of the genus are characterised by barring, sometimes prominently, on the upper breast.[1]
The genusTrichoglossus was introduced in 1826 by the English naturalistJames Francis Stephens.[2] The name combines theAncient Greekthrix meaning "hair" andglōssa meaning "tongue".[3] Thetype species was subsequently designated as thecoconut lorikeet.[4][5]
Following the publication of a molecular phylogenetic study of the lorikeets in 2020, three species were moved fromTrichoglossus to the newly erected genusSaudareos. These were theMindanao lorikeet, theornate lorikeet and theSula lorikeet (formerly the citrine lorikeet).[6][7][8]
The genus contains ten species:[8]
