Trewern is a small village,community andelectoral ward inMontgomeryshire,Powys, Wales. The community includes the villages ofButtington andMiddletown, situated 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northeast ofWelshpool, 14.5 miles (23.3 km) west ofShrewsbury and 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Wales-England border.
The word Trewern isWelsh, formed from the words "tre" meaning town and "gwern" meaning alder (a tree), thus town of the alder or, more likely, alders.
It is situated on theA458 road, between the towns ofNewtown,Shrewsbury andWelshpool. It has a public bus running to these towns. TheAfon Pwll Trewern andAfon Pwll Bychan pass near the village.
Although only a small village in terms of population, there is a primary school,Ysgol Gynradd Buttington Trewern, with pupils travelling from miles around. Also, the school has a public playing area for children to play at. Trewern also has many other sites, such as an extinctvolcano in form ofMoel y Golfa,Cefn y Castell andBreidden Hill
Trewern Hall is ahalf-timbered house in the village dating from the late 16th century. It is Grade II*listed.[2]
Trewern has acommunity council representing the views of the community and has ten community councillors.[3]
The Trewern ward elects a county councillor toPowys County Council. Since 1995 it had been represented by anIndependent councillor.[4]
