TheTreaty of Kremmen was signed on 20 June 1236 by DukeWartislaw III of Pomerania, recognizing theseigniory of theBrandenburg margraves over his Duchy ofPomerania-Demmin, and ceding the terraeStargard,Wustrow andBeseritz to Brandenburg.[1][2]
After the Danish defeat at the 1227Battle of Bornhöved, theGriffin dukes ofPomerania had lost their allies against the rising power of their Brandenburg neighbours in the south. In 1231 EmperorFrederick II had confirmed the seigniory of theAscanian margravesJohn I andOtto III of Brandenburg. At the same time theMecklenburg dukes campaigned theCircipane lands in the west, while the eastern territory ofSchlawe-Stolp was occupied by DukeSwietopelk II of Pomerelia.
To ease the tensions with Brandenburg, Duke Wartislaw entered into the Kremmen agreement. He also stipulated theescheat (reversion) of his Pomeranian lands, would he die without heirs.
