TheTotenkopf is ahill inBaden-Württemberg,Germany, forming the highest point in theKaiserstuhl region. The hill is topped by anobservation tower and a 120-m (394-ft)Deutsche Telekomcommunications tower. Wine and fruit are cultivated on its slopes.

Etymology

The name of the hillTotenkopf, meaningSkull, dates back to the Middle Ages, at which time skulls were frequently to be found upon it, since the German King Otto III, (who would later be crowned Holy Roman EmperorOtto III) chose this hill to be the place of execution for those condemned to death at the hearings conducted at nearbySasbach am Kaiserstuhl, those so condemned suffering death by decapitation according to the judgement of the king.[1]
