Tommy Daniel John Conway (born 6 August 2002) is a professionalfootballer who plays as aforward forEFL Championship clubMiddlesbrough and theScotland national team.
Conway joined the youth academy ofBristol City at the age of 7. He began his senior career on loan withYate Town in 2019–20, before joiningBath City on loan in October 2020.[3] Aged 19, he made his professional debut withBristol City in a 3–1Championship loss away toCoventry City on 5 April 2021.[4] He scored his first professional goal in a 4–1 away loss toMillwall on 1 May 2021.[5]
Conway broke into the first-team at the start of the2022–23 season, and was rewarded with theEFL Young Player of the Month award for August 2022.[6] He ended the season with 12 goals in all competitions.[7]
Conway scored an equalising goal in a2023–24 FA Cup third round match againstWest Ham United atLondon Stadium, then scored the only goal of the replay atAshton Gate.[8] He again ended the season with 12 goals to his name.[7] He was also given the club's Young Player of the Year award.[9]
On 16 August 2024, Conway joinedMiddlesbrough for £4.5 million.[10]
Conway was born inTaunton, England. He qualifies to play for Scotland through his paternal grandfather, who was born inStirling.[11][12][13][14]
He was first selected for theScotland under-21 squad in September 2022.[15] He scored his first international goal on 18 June 2023, in a 1–1 friendly home draw againstNorway.[16]
On 4 June 2024, Conway received his first call-up to theScotland senior national team, being included in the provisional squad forUEFA Euro 2024 by managerSteve Clarke, following withdrawals byLyndon Dykes andBen Doak due to injury.[17][18] He made his full international debut three days later, coming on forLawrence Shankland in the 63rd minute of a 2–2 friendly draw againstFinland.[19][20] He was included in the final squad for the aforementioned tournament in Germany,[21] but did not make an appearance as Scotland were eliminated at the group stage.
