Tom Wills Oval is the training facility and headquarters of theGreater Western Sydney Giants. It is located inSydney Olympic Park nearSydney Showground Stadium, where the Giants play most of theirAustralian Football League (AFL) home matches. The facility includes anAustralian rules football oval and a community centre.

The facility is named afterTom Wills, one of the founders of Australian rules football, who was born in thecolony of New South Wales.[1]

History

[edit]

After being established in 2010, the Giants utilisedBlacktown ISP Oval inRooty Hill as their main training facility.[2][3] Home matches were played in Blacktown when the club competed in theTAC Cup in2010 and theNorth East Australian Football League (NEAFL) in2011.[4][5] One match was played at the ground againstWest Coast during the Giants'inaugural AFL season in 2012.[6][7]

In April 2013, anA$11.6 million redevelopment of a former golf driving range into the club's new training ground commenced. The facility opened on 6 May 2013 and was named "Tom Wills Oval".[8]

In 2021, reports emerged that Tom Wills had been involved in reprisal attacks against Indigenous people following theCullin-la-ringo massacre in 1861, which prompted calls to change the oval's name.[1]

Tom Wills Oval will host its firstVictorian Football League (VFL) match inround 1 of the2026 season when the Giants hostSt Kilda.[9]
