Thomas Gillies (born 7 March 1990) is a formerAustralian rules footballer for theGeelong Football Club and theMelbourne Football Club in theAustralian Football League (AFL).
Tom began his career with the Traralgon-based Tedas Junior Football Club. He then went on to play with the Narre Warren Football Club which led to getting selected to play for theDandenong Stingrays in theTAC Cup. Gillies won the Stingrays best and fairest award in 2008.[1]
Gillies was selected byGeelong with the 33rd pick in the2008 AFL draft.
He made his debut in round 15 of the2009 AFL season against theBrisbane Lions[2] and played in six of the last eight games of the year. At the end of the year he was awarded Geelong's best first year player award.[3]
After playing 13 games in three seasons with Geelong, Gillies was delisted by the club at the end of the2012 AFL season.[4] He was offered a one-year contract byMelbourne and joined the Demons ahead of the 2013 season.[5]
Gillies played just two matches for Melbourne in the middle of the2013 AFL season under coachMark Neeld and was delisted at the end of that season.[6]
In 2014 he began playing forSt Mary's in theGeelong Football League (GFL).[7] Gillies had been preparing for life after the AFL taking theVictoria Police entrance exam and joining the police academy.[8]
After becoming one of the GFL's leading goalkickers, Gillies later joined theBannockburn Football Club.[9]
