Thomas Michael "Tom" Demmer[1] (born August 3,[2] 1986) is aRepublican member of theIllinois House of Representatives representing the 90th district from 2013 to 2023. The 90th district, located in northwestern Illinois included parts ofLee County,Ogle County,LaSalle County, andDeKalb County.[3]
Demmer was born and raised inDixon, Illinois, where he continues to live with his wife.[4] He attended St. Anne School,Newman Central Catholic High School, and theUniversity of Dayton, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a minor in political science.[5]
He was aWhite House intern in theOffice of the Vice President of the United States in 2006.[6] For a time, Demmer was Director of Innovation & Strategy atKSB Hospital. From 2008 to 2012, he was a member of theLee CountyBoard of Commissioners.[6]
In 2023, he became Executive Director of the Lee County Industrial Development Association. The Lee County Industrial Development Association is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote, develop, and facilitate industrial, commercial, and business enterprises in Lee County[7]
Demmer was a top Illinois House Republican[8] who served as Deputy Republican Leader from 2018 to 2023.[9] Demmer was the chief budget negotiator for the Illinois House Republicans,[10] and was the caucus leader onMedicaid and healthcare policy issues.[11]
Previously, Demmer was Republican Conference Chairman from January 2017 to July 2018.[12] He was a member of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules from 2016 to 2023.[13]
Demmer was the Republican Spokesperson[14] on the Special Investigating Committee II in 2020 to investigate the conduct ofMichael Madigan, the then-Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, who was later indicted by a federal grand jury on 22 counts ofracketeering andbribery in connection with allegedcorruption schemes.[15]
Demmer served as an Illinois co-chair for theJohn Kasich's 2016 presidential campaign.[16]
In the 2022 general election, Demmer ran forIllinois Treasurer. Demmer lost the election to incumbentMike Frerichs.
