Todd Shell (born June 24, 1962) is an American former professionalfootball player who was alinebacker for theSan Francisco 49ers of theNational Football League (NFL).[1] He is also a formerArena Football League (AFL)coach for theSan Jose SaberCats,Arizona Rattlers andNew York Dragons.

Professional career

Shell was selected 24th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the1984 NFL draft.[2] In Week 13 of the1984 season, against theNew Orleans Saints, Shell became the first NFL rookie to record 2.0+ sacks and a touchdown in a single game, when he returned an interception for 53 yards.[3] As of 2023, only two other defenders,Andy Katzenmoyer andDevon Witherspoon, had achieved this.
