Todd Rosenthal is an Americanscenic designer. He won the 2008Tony Award for Best Scenic Design and the 2009Laurence Olivier Award for Best Set Design forSteppenwolf Theatre Company'sAugust: Osage County.
A native ofLongmeadow, Massachusetts,[1] Rosenthal received aBachelor of Arts degree fromColgate University and aMaster of Fine Arts from theYale School of Drama, where he received theDonald M. Oenslager Scholarship for Stage Design.[2] He also studied at theArt Students League of New York andMoore College of Art.[3]
Rosenthal made hisBroadway debut withAugust: Osage County. He considered the three-level set, which he called ajuxtaposition of the "gothic and the whimsical," to be a central character in the play. Of it he said, "It's immovable, an indelible image ... people move out, but the house never changes."[1]
Rosenthal'sregional theatre credits include productions for theGoodman Theatre,Steppenwolf Theatre Company,Centerstage inBaltimore,Alley Theatre inHouston, thePhiladelphia Theatre Company,San Jose Repertory Theatre,Alliance Theatre inAtlanta,Yale Repertory Theatre,Lyric Opera of Chicago,Arena Stage inWashington, D.C., thePaper Mill Playhouse inMillburn, New Jersey,Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, and theBig Apple Circus.[2][3]
Rosenthal's commercial projects include micro-brewery-themed restaurants forAnheuser Busch; a pirate-themed restaurant at theTreasure Island Hotel and Casino on theLas Vegas Strip; and a mining-themed tavern and restaurant for theCopper Mountain Resort inColorado.[3]
Rosenthal was anadjunct professor of design atDePaul University from 1995 until 2003. He has been a professor in the Department of Theatre atNorthwestern University since Autumn 2003.[2][3]
