Tobias Pereira Figueiredo (born 2 February 1994) is a Portuguese professionalfootballer who plays as acentral defender forCampeonato Brasileiro Série B clubAthletico Paranaense, on loan fromFortaleza.

Formed atSporting CP, where he made 30 first-team appearances, he had loans in Spain, Portugal and England before signing permanently forNottingham Forest, where he played over 100EFL Championship games.

Figueiredo earned 66caps forPortugal at youth level, scoring seven goals. He was part of their team at the2016 Olympics.

Club career

Sporting CP

Born inSátão,Viseu District, Figueiredo joinedSporting CP's youth setup in 2006 at the age of 12, after starting out atS.C. Penalva do Castelo. He was promoted tothe reserves in the summer of 2012, and made his professional debut on 11 August by starting in a 1–0 away loss againstU.D. Oliveirense in theSegunda Liga.[3]

On 29 January 2014, Figueiredo was loaned to Spanish clubCF Reus Deportiu until June, alongside Sporting teammateAlexandre Guedes.[4] An undisputed starter during his time in theSegunda División B,[5] he returned to the Lions in June 2014 and was promoted to the main squad in January of the following year.[6]

Figueiredo made hisPrimeira Liga debut on 18 January 2015, playing the full 90 minutes in a 4–2 home win againstRio Ave FC.[7] He scored his first goal in the competition on 1 February, closing the 3–1 victory atF.C. Arouca.[8] A month later, he added another in the first leg of thesemi-finals of theTaça de Portugal againstC.D. Nacional,[9] as the latter tournament was eventuallywon with him as an unusedsubstitute.[10]

On 30 April 2015, Figueiredo extended his contract with Sporting until 2021.[11] On 28 June of the following year, deemed surplus to requirements by managerJorge Jesus, he was loaned to fellow top-division Nacional.[12] He scored his only goal in a 1–3 home loss toS.L. Benfica,[13] asthe season ended in relegation in last place.[14]

Nottingham Forest

On 30 January 2018, completely ostracised by managerJorge Jesus,[15] Figueiredo signed on loan with EnglishChampionship sideNottingham Forest until the end ofthe campaign.[16] He made his debut on 17 February, playing the entire 0–0 away draw againstBurton Albion.[17]

On 20 April 2018, it was announced that Figueiredo would join Forest on a permanent four-year deal on 1 July, for an undisclosed fee.[18] He wassent off on 28 November in a 5–5 draw atAston Villa, for a bad foul onJohn McGinn while winning 4–3.[19] The day before the anniversary of that match, he scored his first goal inEnglish football to open a 4–0 victory away toQueens Park Rangers fromJoe Lolley'scorner kick.[20]

In January 2022, Figueiredo was tracked for a transfer toVitória de Guimarães, first as a loan and later as a free transfer pending the termination of his Forest contract. The deal collapsed as theCity Ground club did not submit the documentation on time.[21] He did not feature inMay's playoffs as the Reds ended their 23-year absence from thePremier League with a1–0 final win overHuddersfield Town.[22][23]

Figueiredo left on 30 June 2022 as his contract expired.[24]

Hull City

On 28 June 2022, Figueiredo signed a two-year contract withHull City, with the club holding an option for an extra year.[25] He made his debut on 30 July, starting in the 2–1 home win againstBristol City.[26] On 17 September he made mistakes that led to two goals in a 3–0 loss atSwansea City;[27] he took no part from January onwards as new managerLiam Rosenior preferredAlfie Jones andSean McLoughlin in central defence.[28]

Brazil

On 11 July 2023, Figueiredo signed a three-year contract withFortaleza Esporte Clube; the Brazilian club acquired 70% of his economic rights for an undisclosed fee.[29] In March 2024, he was loaned to fellowSérie A sideCriciúma Esporte Clube.[30] He scored his first goal for the latter later that month,heading home from acorner kick in a 2–1 away win overBrusque Futebol Clube in theCampeonato Catarinense.[31]

Figueiredo joinedClub Athletico Paranaense ofSérie B in February 2025, also on loan.[32]

International career

Figueiredo participated in twoUEFA European Under-21 Championship editions withPortugal,[33][34] playing twice in2015 for the runners-up.[35][36] He won his firstcap at that level on 13 November 2014, in a 3–1friendly defeat toEngland atTurf Moor.[37]

Figueiredo was also picked by managerRui Jorge for hissquad that appeared at the2016 Summer Olympics.[38] He featured in all the matches inRio de Janeiro, in an eventualquarter-final exit.[39][40][41][42]

Personal life

Figueiredo's older brother,Cristiano, was also a footballer. He played his youth football withS.C. Braga.[43]
