Tirur (Malayalam:[t̪iɾuːr]) is a major municipal town inTirur Taluk,Malappuram district, in theIndianstate ofKerala, spread over an area of 16.55 square kilometres (6.39 sq mi).

It is one of the major business centers inMalappuram district and is situated 26 kilometres (16 mi) west ofMalappuram and 52.5 kilometres (32.6 mi) south ofKozhikode, on theShoranur–Mangalore section underSouthern Railway.

Tirur is a major trading centre forelectronic devices andseafood inNorthern Kerala and has an average elevation of 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) above the sea level.

The medievalKerala school of astronomy and mathematics was mainly centred in and around present-dayTirur Taluk.[3] Puthiyangadi region in Tirur served as the headquarters of the medievalfeudal principality of Tanur,[4] who were allied on various occasions to theZamorins of Calicut, prior to theEast India Company rule in the region (1792–1858) and subsequentBritish Raj (1858–1947).Tirur railway station, built in 1861, is the oldest railway station in Kerala.[5]

As of 2001[update] Indiacensus,[6] Tirur had a population of 53,650, of which 48% are male and 52% female. Tirur has an average literacy rate of 95%, higher than the national average of 71.0%: male literacy is 96%, and female literacy is 94%. In Tirur, 13% of the population is under six years of age.Tirur Assembly constituency is part ofPonnani (Lok Sabha constituency).[7]
