Tiruchirappalli Metrorail was a proposed monorail system for the city ofTiruchirappalli,Tamil Nadu, part of a major expansion ofpublic transport in the city.
As of March 2021[update] the proposal was still only on paper.[1] After a feasibility study, it was replaced by a rail project, theTiruchirappalli Metro.[2]
As the monorail market is estimated to be₹72,000 crore (US$8.5 billion) in India,[3] the thenGovernor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Brohit announced inLegislative assembly that the Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to do a feasibility study for introducing monorail system in Tiruchi along withSalem Metro,Madurai Metro,[4] andTirunelveli.
The government has earmarked a sum of about₹60,000 crore (US$7.1 billion) formetro and monorail projects in Tamil Nadu.[5]
A faculty member fromSASTRA, usingGeographical Information System (GIS) tools, had worked out a proposal for a suburban railway route linking theSrirangam Island with Tiruchirapalli and its suburbs.
The proposal suggested circular operation in the following routes:
The proposal also suggested a new rail link betweenChord line and Tiruchirapalli-Karur railway lines, Via. Amma Mandapam and also a possible extension toKailasapuram (BHEL) andBikshandarkovil neighbourhoods. There is no decision on extending the line to cover theCentral andChathiram bus stations and theTiruchirappalli International Airport.[6]
