Tinjacá is a town andmunicipality inBoyacá Department,Colombia, part of the subregion of theRicaurte Province. Tinjacá is located on theAltiplano Cundiboyacense at a distance of 54 kilometres (34 mi) from the department capitalTunja. It bordersSutamarchán in the north,Ráquira in the south,Sáchica in the east and in the westChiquinquirá andSaboyá.[1]
Tinjacá is derived fromChibcha and means "Enclosure of the powerful lord".[1][2]
The area of Tinjacá before theSpanish conquest was part of theMuisca Confederation, a loose confederation of differentMuisca rulers. Thecacique of Tinjacá was loyal to thezaque ofHunza. Modern Tinjacá was founded on November 7, 1555.[1]
