Timothy Hugh Clutton-BrockFRS (born 13 August 1946)[citation needed] is a Britishzoologist known for his comparative studies of thebehavioural ecology ofmammals,[1] particularlyred deer andmeerkats.[2][3]

Education

Clutton-Bruck attendedRugby School.[4] In terms of his university education, Clutton-Brock was educated at theUniversity of Cambridge, where he received aPhD in 1972.[3]

Career and research

As of 2008, he is the Prince Philip Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology,[5] and head of the Large Animal Research Group at the Department of Zoology of theUniversity of Cambridge,[2] and a fellow ofMagdalene College, Cambridge.[6]He also holds extraordinary professorships in the Department of Zoology and Entomology and the Mammal Research Institute of theUniversity of Pretoria, South Africa.[7]

Clutton-Brock's early work was on social behaviour inprimates.[8] Much of his recent work focuses on three long-term studies: ofRed Deer on the Scottish island ofRùm, ofSoay sheep onSt Kilda, and ofmeerkats in the southernKalahari.[5] He is one of the founders of theKalahari Meerkat Project, the subjects of which are featured in the television programmeMeerkat Manor.[9][10]

Awards and honours

He was elected a Fellow of theRoyal Society in 1987.[8] He is anISI Highly Cited researcher.[11]He won the 1997Frink Medal of theZoological Society of London.

In 2012, he was awarded theDarwin Medal from the Royal Society for his work on the diversity of animal societies and demonstration of their effects on the evolution of reproductive strategies, and the operation of selection and the dynamics of populations.[12]
