Tillotama Shome (Bengali pronunciation:[tilotːɔmaʃom];[1] born 25 June 1979[2]) is anIndian actress known primarily for her work in independent films. She began acting with a supporting role inMira Nair's filmMonsoon Wedding (2001). She won theFilmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for playing the lead role of a housemaid in the drama filmSir (2018). Shome has also starred in the filmsA Death in the Gunj (2017) andLust Stories 2 (2023), as well as the television seriesDelhi Crime (2022),The Night Manager (2023), andPaatal Lok (2025).
Shome was born inBengali Family inKolkata to Anupam and Baisakhi Shome.[3] Shome grew up all over India since her father was with theIndian Air Force.[4]
Shome went to Delhi'sLady Shri Ram College and joinedArvind Gaur's Asmita theatre group.[5] She moved toNew York in the autumn of 2004 for a master's program in educational theatre atNew York University, where she remained until visitingMumbai on holiday in February 2008. Thereafter, she took up residence in Mumbai and after completing some outstanding projects in New York, she returned to India in May 2008.[6] In New York, she also taught theatre to murder convicts at a high security US prison.[7][8]
She made her film debut as Alice inMira Nair's feature filmMonsoon Wedding,[9] and played Deepa inShadows of Time (Schatten der Zeit), directed byFlorian Gallenberger. She played a nun in theAustralian filmThe Waiting City byClaire McCarthy.[7] Italo Spinelli'sGangor, based onMahashweta Devi's novel, had her play a social worker.[10] She also worked inQaushiq Mukherjee'sTasher Desh.[11] She played Mrs. Ahmadi in theHindi political thriller filmShanghai directed byDibakar Banerjee. About her performance inShanghai,Rediff wrote "Shome created one of this year's most heartbreaking performances in a Hindi film".[12]
Her other roles have included Lara inLittle Box of Sweets (directed by Meneka Das),[13] Jaya inLong After (short film, directed byAfia Nathaniel) and Miraal inButterfly (directed by Tanuj Chopra).
Her performance as a girl who is raised as a boy inQissa won her the best actress title in the New Horizons Competition of the seventhAbu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF). She shared the title with Norwegian actressJulia Wildschutt.[14]
Shome is married to Kunal Ross, the nephew ofJaya Bachchan, thus making her the niece-in-law of Jaya andAmitabh Bachchan.[15][16]
