Atidal island is a raised area of land within awaterbody, which is connected to the larger mainland by a naturalisthmus or man-madecauseway that is exposed at lowtide and submerged at high tide, causing the land to switch between being apromontory/peninsula and anisland depending on tidal conditions.

Because of the mystique surrounding tidal islands, many of them have been sites ofreligious worship, such asMont-Saint-Michel with itsBenedictineabbey. Tidal islands are also commonly the sites offortresses because of the natural barrier created by the tidalchannel.
