Tiago Emanuel Embaló Djaló (Portuguese pronunciation:[tiˈaɣudʒɐˈlɔ]; 9 April 2000) is a Portuguese professionalfootballer who plays as acentre-back forSüper Lig clubBeşiktaş and thePortugal national team.

Club career

Sporting CP

Djaló was born inAmadora,Lisbon metropolitan area toBissau-Guinean parents, and he joinedSporting CP'sacademy in 2013 from Sport Futebol Damaiense.[2] On 24 February 2018, still a junior, he made his professional debut in theLigaPro withtheir reserves, playing 74 minutes in a 2–2 home draw againstAcadémica de Coimbra.[3]

On 11 April 2018, Djaló scored his first goal in the second division, closing the 1–1 home draw withFamalicão.[4]

AC Milan

In January 2019, Djaló was signed byAC Milan as his contract with Sporting was about to expire.[5] In July, alongside several otheryouth team players, he was invited to train with the first team by the newly appointed coachMarco Giampaolo.[6] He appeared in his only match for the club in afriendly withNovara, coming on as a second-halfsubstitute.[7]

Lille

Djaló joinedLille on 1 August 2019 on a five-year deal, for an undisclosed fee reported to be within the area of €5 million.[8][9][10] He made his debut in the FrenchLigue 1 ten days later, starting in central defence alongside his compatriotJosé Fonte in the 2–1 home victory overNantes.[11] He first appeared in theUEFA Champions League on 23 October, featuring 87 minutes in a 1–1 draw againstValencia in thegroup stage also at theStade Pierre-Mauroy.[12]

Djaló againstSalzburg in 2021

In the2020–21 season, Djaló contributed 17 games to help his team win the national championship for the first time since2011.[13] On 1 August, he started as Lille won theTrophée des Champions1–0 againstParis Saint-Germain atBloomfield Stadium inTel Aviv, Israel.[14] He scored his first league goal on 6 November that year, opening an eventual 1–1 home draw withAngers.[15]

On 4 March 2023, early in a league fixture away toLens, Djaló suffered ananterior cruciate ligament injury, being sidelined for several months. During his spell, he made 102 appearances in all competitions.[16][17]

Juventus

On 22 January 2024, Djaló returned to the ItalianSerie A, signing a contract until June 2026 withJuventus;[18] the club paid a reported €3.6 million transfer fee, which could rise to €5.1 million with add-ons.[19] He remained on the bench inthe final of theCoppa Italia on 15 May, a 1–0 win overAtalanta inRome.[20] His league debut took place ten days later, when he played 16 minutes of the 2–0 victory againstMonza.[21]

Djaló moved toPorto on 2 September 2024, on aseason-long loan.[22] He scored on his debut on 20 October, closing the 3–0 win at amateursSintrense in thethird round of theTaça de Portugal.[23][24] He repeated the feat the next game, opening a 2–0 home defeat ofTSG Hoffenheim in theleague phase of theUEFA Europa League to become the club's first-ever defender to achieve this.[25]

However, after managerVítor Bruno's dismissal and his replacement byMartín Anselmi in January 2025, Djaló was involved in several off-field problems and deemed surplus to requirements.[26][27]

Beşiktaş

On 27 August 2025, Djaló joinedBeşiktaş on a permanent three-year deal for €3.5 million.[28][29]

International career

Djaló won 26caps forPortugal at youth level. His first for theunder-21 side occurred on 14 November 2019, in a 0–0 friendly draw againstSlovenia held inEstoril.[30][31]

On 21 March 2022, Djaló received his first call-up to thesenior squad, afterPepe tested positive forCOVID-19 ahead of the2022 FIFA World Cupqualification play-offs againstTurkey.[32] In October, he was named in a preliminary 55-man squad for the finals in Qatar.[33]

Djaló finally made his full debut on 18 November 2024, playing 27 minutes of the 1–1 draw inCroatia for theUEFA Nations League in place of fellow debutantTomás Araújo; Portugal had already secured first place in their group with one fixture remaining.[34][35]

Personal life

Djaló is multilingual, being fluent in English, French,Cape Verdean Creole andGuinea-Bissau Creole apart from his native Portuguese. He also speaks some Spanish.[36]
