TheThracian Sea [ a] is the northernmost part of theAegean Sea . It is bounded byMacedonia andThrace as well as northwesternTurkey . It connects to theBlack Sea through theDardanelles Straight , theMarmara Sea , and theBosphorus Straight .[ 1]
The entire area of the sea lies north of the40th parallel . Its length from east to west is from23°E to about 25.8°E, or from theStrymonian Gulf east to the northernmost part of theGallipoli peninsula and the width from north to south is about 40.25°N to41°N , or from the Dardanelles north to the boundary between theXanthi and theRhodope regional units.
Islands in the Thracian Sea includeThasos andSamothrace inGreece , andGökçeada (Imvros in Greek) inTurkey . In the south, the sea extends to the north coast of the island ofLemnos . The bays and gulfs include theIerissian Gulf to the southwest, the Strymonian Gulf where theStrymon River empties, theKavala Gulf and theSaros Gulf in Turkey. Rivers emptying into this portion of the gulf include theNestos and theEvros/Meriç . The famous thermal springs areLoutra Eleftheron in Kavala.[citation needed ]
The northern part of the Thracian Sea is a habitat for the endangered Black Seaharbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena relicta) .[ 2]
