Synthesis

Thorium oxyfluoride can be prepared from partial hydrolysis ofthorium tetrafluoride in moist air at elevated temperatures, about 1000 °C.^[4]^[5]

ThF₄ + H₂O → ThOF₂ + 2 HF

Reaction ofthorium tetrafluoride withthorium dioxide at 600 °C:

ThF₄ + ThO₂ → 2 ThOF₂

Physical properties

The compound forms a white, insoluble amorphous powder.^[6]

Uses

The compound is used as a protective coating on reflective surfaces.^[7]
