Thomas Proe (1852–1922) was analderman andmayor ofBrisbane,Queensland,Australia.
Thomas Proe was born in 1852 atWigan,Lancashire,England, the son of Thomas Proe and Jane Beckman.[1][2]
He came to Queensland in 1876 and married Mary Strasburg (daughter of Frederick Strasburg and Frederica Mundt) in Brisbane in 1881. They had seven children:[1][2][3]
Proe died on 17 December 1922 at his residence "Wyralla", Mark street,New Farm, aged 71 years. He is buried inToowong Cemetery. His wife died in 1924 and is buried with him.[1][2][3][4]
Thomas Proe trained as anengineer in England, but in Brisbane he became apublican. He owned the Osborne Hotel and laterRoyal George Hotel,Ann Street,Fortitude Valley.[1][3][5]
Thomas Proe was served as analderman of theBrisbane Municipal Council from 1895 to 1905. He wasmayor of theBrisbane Municipal Council in 1901 and again in 1905 asmayor of theBrisbane City Council (Brisbane having become acity in 1903). His service to the council, included[1][3][5]
During his term as mayor, Brisbane was in 1901 visited by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (laterKing George V andQueen Mary). In recognition of his work for that occasion, he was appointed aCompanion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) 15 May 1901.[6]
Thomas Proe was president for some years of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, a member of the Brisbane Metropolitan Water Board,[1] and a member of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers.[5]
He was also a member of the Masons.[5]
