Thomas Nixon Carver (25 March 1865 – 8 March 1961) was an American economics professor.[1][2]

Early life

He grew up on a farm, the son ofQuaker parents.[3] He received an undergraduate education atIowa Wesleyan College and theUniversity of Southern California. After studying underJohn Bates Clark andRichard T. Ely atJohns Hopkins University, he received aPhD degree atCornell University underWalter Francis Willcox in 1894.[4]

Career

He held a joint appointment ineconomics andsociology atOberlin College until 1902, when he accepted a position as professor ofpolitical economy atHarvard University (1902–1935). For a time, there he taught the only course in sociology. He was the secretary-treasurer of theAmerican Economic Association (1909–1913) and was elected its president in 1916.[5]

Carver's principal achievement in economic theory was to extend Clark's theory ofmarginalism to determination of interest from saving ('abstinence') andproductivity ofcapital.[6][7] He made pioneering contributions toagricultural andrural economics and inrural sociology.[5][8] He wrote on such diverse topics asmonetary economics,[9]macroeconomics,[10] thedistribution of wealth,[11] theproblem of evil,[12] uses of religion,[13]political science,[14]political economy,[15][16]social justice,[17]behavioral economics,[18]social evolution,[19] and the economics of national survival.[20]
