Thomas Brodie-Sangster (born 16 May 1990) is an English actor. As achild actor, he gained recognition for his roles in the commercially successful filmsLove Actually (2003) andNanny McPhee (2005). He voicedFerb in the first four seasons ofPhineas and Ferb (2007–2015), and subsequently gained wider attention with his roles as Jake Murray inAccused (2010–2012),Jojen Reed inGame of Thrones (2013–2014) and Newt in theMaze Runner film series (2014–2018). Continued acclaim ensued with theindependent filmsNowhere Boy (2009), in which he portrayedPaul McCartney,Bright Star (2009), andDeath of a Superhero (2011).
Brodie-Sangster received praise for his roles in the miniseriesGodless (2017) andThe Queen's Gambit (2020), both forNetflix; his performance as chess champion Benny Watts inThe Queen's Gambit earned him a nomination for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. He has since portrayed thetitular pickpocket in theDisney+ comedy seriesThe Artful Dodger (2023–present) andRafe Sadler in the series sequelWolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light (2024), reprising his earlier role in the firstWolf Hall (2015) series.
Thomas Brodie-Sangster was born on 16 May 1990[1] inSouthwark,London, to Mark Sangster and Tasha Bertram. Brodie-Sangster's father's family is fromBanchory, Scotland.[2]

In 2001, Brodie-Sangster's first acting role was in a BBC television film,Station Jim. He subsequently appeared in a few more television films, including the lead roles inBobbie's Girl,The Miracle of the Cards (based on the story ofCraig Shergold) andStig of the Dump. He won the "Golden Nymph" award at the 43rd AnnualMonte Carlo Television Festival[3] for his role in the miniseriesEntrusted. Brodie-Sangster's first major theatrical film wasLove Actually (2003), in which he played Sam. He was nominated for aGolden Satellite Award[4] and aYoung Artist Award[5] for his role in the film.
Brodie-Sangster next appeared in a television adaptation of the novelFeather Boy and played a younger version ofJames Franco's Tristan in the film version ofTristan & Isolde. Brodie-Sangster next starred in the commercially successful filmNanny McPhee (2005) as the eldest of seven children.
In 2007, he appeared in a two-part story ("Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood") inDoctor Who as schoolboy Tim Latimer,[6] and guest-starred in theBig FinishDoctor Who audio dramasThe Mind's Eye[7] andThe Bride of Peladon. He also starred in the film adaptation ofValerio Massimo Manfredi's historical novelThe Last Legion, released in 2007. That same year, he voiced the character ofFerb Fletcher in theDisney Channel animated seriesPhineas and Ferb. He appeared in the 2008 miniseriesPinocchio, filmed in Italy, as Lampwick.
In 2008, Brodie-Sangster had a role in directorJane Campion's filmBright Star, a love story aboutJohn Keats and his lover Fanny Brawne. He also starred asPaul McCartney inNowhere Boy, a film directed by artistSam Taylor-Wood, about the teenage years ofJohn Lennon.
Brodie-Sangster appeared as Casey in the filmSome Dogs Bite, about a boy who wants to keep his family together. He also appeared in the Irish filmDeath of a Superhero, based on the novel byAnthony McCarten.[8]

In 2011, Brodie-Sangster played Liam in the filmThe Last Furlong. In April that same year, he made a guest appearance as Adam Douglas in an episode of British detective dramaLewis. In 2012, he starred inThe Baytown Outlaws, in which he plays a young disabled man in a wheelchair, and in Ella Jones's short filmThe Ugly Duckling, the third instalment of theTales trilogy of reworked fairy tales fromMore Films.[9] From 2013 to 2014, he played the role ofJojen Reed in the HBO seriesGame of Thrones.[10] Also in 2014, he starred inthe Luka State's music video for their single "30 Minute Break".[11] In 2015, he began providing the voice ofJohn Tracy in ITV's remake ofGerry Anderson's puppet seriesThunderbirds Are Go (2015–2020).
Brodie-Sangster played Newt in the 20th Century FoxMaze Runner trilogy, includingThe Maze Runner (2014),Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), andMaze Runner: The Death Cure (2018).[12] In BBC2's 6-part television adaptation ofWolf Hall (on BBC2 from 21 January 2015), Brodie-Sangster portrayedRalph Sadler, the ward ofThomas Cromwell.[13]
On 24 May 2017, a 15-minute sequel toLove Actually was released, with Brodie-Sangster as part of the cast. It was shown on the BBC as part of Comic Relief'sRed Nose Day and titledRed Nose Day Actually; it brought back a large number of characters from the first film.[14]
In 2017, Brodie-Sangster began portraying Whitey Winn in the 2017Netflixwesterndrama miniseriesGodless, created byScott Frank.
Brodie-Sangster began the 2020s with a role as chess player Benny Watts in the Netflix miniseriesThe Queen's Gambit (2020), marking his second collaboration with Frank.[15] His performance as Watts earned Brodie-Sangster a nomination for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
In 2023, Brodie-Sangster playedJack "Artful Dodger" Dawkins, originally featured inCharles Dickens' 1838 novelOliver Twist, in theDisney+ miniseriesThe Artful Dodger, which follows the character after the novel's events.[16] On 21 November 2024, it was announced that the show had been renewed for a second series and that Brodie-Sangster would reprise his role from the first series.[17]
Brodie-Sangster established Brodie Films in 2006 with his mother, Tasha Bertram, "to create opportunities in the film industry for new British talent; innovative writers, actors and directors".[18] The company was dissolved in May 2013.[19]
Brodie-Sangster plays bass guitar and, in January 2010, joined the band Winnet, in which his mother provides vocals.[20]
Brodie-Sangster married actressTalulah Riley on 22 June 2024, in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.[21]
