"This Strange Effect" is a song written byRay Davies ofthe Kinks, released as a single byDave Berry in July 1965.[1] The single was released in the United States in September 1965. It reached No. 1 in theNetherlands,[1] but peaked at No. 37 on theUK Singles Chart.[2]

The Kinks version

Astudiorecording was never officially released by the Kinks, but live recordings exist. An in-studio BBC recording by the Kinks from August 1965 was first released in 2001 onBBC Sessions 1964–1977.[1][3]

Bill Wymancovered the track for his 1992 albumStuff.[4] This version can also be found onA Stone Alone: The Solo Anthology 1974–2002.[5]

BelgianbandHooverphonic covered the song in 1998 for their album,Blue Wonder Power Milk.[1]

A remixed Hooverphonic version of the song also appears on the 1999Thievery Corporationcompilation album,Abductions and Reconstructions.[6]

Steve Wynn also covered the track.[1]

Squeeze covered the song on the deluxe edition of their 2015 album,Cradle to the Grave.[7]

A cover version performed byUnloved serves as the theme song for the 2021 drama seriesNine Perfect Strangers onHulu, as well as appearing in the third season ofKilling Eve.[8]
