Thiruvattar is apanchayat town inKanyakumari district in theIndianstate ofTamil Nadu.
This town is situated 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north-east ofMarthandam and 30 km (19 mi) north-west ofNagercoil. The two main riversPahrali River andKothai surround the village and join inMoovattumugam, giving the nameThiru (sacred)+vatta (surround)+aru (river).[1] This village, where the famousSri Adikesavaperumal Temple is located, is one of the 108Divya Desams.[2] Thiruvattar has been mentioned as Adi Keshava kshetra by Madhva sect saint ShriVadiraja Tirtha in his pilgrimage travelogueTirtha Prabandha written in sixteenth century.
As of 2001[update] Indiacensus,[3] Thiruvattaru had a population of 18,404. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Thiruvattaru has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 75%. In Thiruvattaru, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Thiruvattar assembly constituency is part ofNagercoil (Lok Sabha constituency).[4]
