Theyyannam is a traditional ritualfolk art form that exists among thePulaya,Kurava andParaya communities of the centralTravancore region inKerala,India.[1] It is mainly performed inMavelikkara,Pandalam and some other parts ofAlappuzha district.[2] It is an art form associated withagriculture, specificallypaddy cultivation.[2]
Eight men plough up apaddy field and plant seedlings. Women enter with breakfast for the men and begin to help planting. They then grow, harvest and thresh the crop together, thus representing all stages of cultivation.[2] The dance is performed to the accompaniment ofharmonium,idakka andtabla.[2]
