Theodore E. Hancock (May 30, 1847 – November 19, 1916) was an Americanlawyer andpolitician. He wasNew York's Attorney General from 1894 to 1898.[1]

Biography

He was born on May 30, 1847, inGranby, New York, to Freeman Hancock and Mary Williams.[2]

He graduated fromFalley Seminary inFulton in 1867, and fromWesleyan University in 1871. He then studied law at theColumbia University Law School, and graduated with aBachelor of Laws. He was admitted to the bar in 1873.[2]

In 1873, he commenced practice inNew York City in the office ofBangs & North. A few years later, he removed toSyracuse, New York, and opened the office ofGilbert & Hancock.

In 1879, he established the firm ofHancock, Beach, Peck and Devine inSyracuse. His son Stewart F. Hancock was considered the "modern-day founder of the firm", and his grandsonStewart F. Hancock Jr. rejoined the firm in 1994 after serving on theNew York Court of Appeals.[3]

He was aJustice of the Peace; and was District Attorney ofOnondaga County from 1889 to 1892.[4] He wasNew York Attorney General from 1894 to 1898, elected at theNew York state election, 1893, and re-elected at theNew York state election, 1895 on theRepublican ticket. In 1897,Wesleyan University conferred on him the honorary degree ofDoctor of Laws (LL.D.). In 1899, he ran forMayor of Syracuse, New York.

He died on November 19, 1916, inSyracuse, New York.

He was married on June 7, 1882, to Martha B. Connelly ofWheeling, West Virginia, and had three children:[2]
