The Westminster Alice is the name of a collection ofvignettes written byHector Hugh Munro (Saki) in 1902 and published byThe Westminster Gazette of London. It is a politicalparody ofLewis Carroll's two books,Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) andThrough the Looking-Glass (1871).
The book features 48 drawings byFrancis Carruthers Gould, after the originals byJohn Tenniel.
It is critical of the politics of the day, of whichAlice tries to make sense. A number of notable British politicians are identified in the book.Joseph Chamberlain is theQueen of Hearts, theRed Queen, and theMad Hatter;Arthur Balfour is theWhite Queen and theMarch Hare;the Marquess of Salisbury is theKing of Hearts and theDormouse;Archbishop of CanterburyFrederick Temple is theDuchess; andRedvers Buller isHumpty Dumpty.
