The Story of Star Wars is a 1977 record album presenting an abridged version of the events depicted in the filmStar Wars, using dialogue and sound effects from the original film.[1] The recording was produced byGeorge Lucas andAlan Livingston, and was narrated byRoscoe Lee Browne.[2] The script was adapted by E. Jack Kaplan and Cheryl Gard-Wornson. The album was released on20th Century Fox Records (T-550) and came with an illustrated 16-page souvenirphoto book.[3]
The original film became a hit in the days beforehome video, so for many fans at the time, this album was the closest to owning a copy of the film they could revisit whenever they wanted. The album was also released oncompact cassette (6101B),[4]8-track tape (8-550),[5] and4-trackreel-to-reel audio tape.[6] It was a commercial success and achievedGold Record status.[7]

Foreign language versions of the album were recorded and produced inFrench (L'Historie de La Guerre des étoiles, narrated byDominique Paturel[8]),German (Krieg der Sterne, narrated by F. J. Steffens[9]),Spanish (La Historia de La Guerra de las Galaxias, narrated by José Catalá[10]),Mexican Spanish (Argumento Completo Narrado de La Guerra de las Galaxias, narrated by León Canales[11]) andJapanese (スターウォーズストーリー日本語版 (The Story of Star Wars (Japanese Version)), narrated byTaichirō Hirokawa[12]).
The sequel films were also recreated into truncated audio adaptations of their original soundtracks;The Empire Strikes Back was adapted for records byRSO Records, the album of that film was released asThe Empire Strikes Back: The Adventures of Luke Skywalker with narration provided byMalachi Throne,[13] andReturn of the Jedi was also produced byWalt Disney Productions (which would later acquireLucasfilm in 2012) into an abridged recording for audio, and released that film's album asThe Story of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi through itsBuena Vista Records label with narration done byChuck Riley.[14]
