The Reception of Louis-Philippe at Windsor Castle (French:La reine Victoria présente ses enfants au roi Louis-Philippe à Windsor) is ahistory painting by the GermanartistFranz Xaver Winterhalter. It depicts theQueen Victoria receiving the French monarchLouis Philippe I atWindsor Castle on 8 October 1844 during his state visit to Britain.[1][2] This was a major moment in the earlyEntente Cordiale between the two nations. The Queen is shown surrounded by her four eldest children including, thePrincess Royal, thePrince of Wales,Princess Alice andPrince Alfred. Also present are her husband,Prince Albert, and her mother, theDuchess of Kent. Various members of theTory government are standing behind her including thePrime MinisterRobert Peel,Lord Aberdeen and theDuke of Wellington. Louis Philippe is accompanied by his influentialForeign MinisterFrançois Guizot.[3]
The painting wascommissioned in 1844 for fifteen thousandFrancs by Louis-Philippe for theMusée de l'Histoire de France at thePalace of Versailles. It was displayed at the Salon of 1846 at theLouvre inParis but not fully finished until the following year.[4] A smaller, replica version was produced, likely commissioned by Queen Victoria, and is today in theRoyal Collection.[5]
