The Mosquito Bowl is an upcoming American sportsaction drama film directed byPeter Berg and produced by Film 44 andImagine Entertainment forNetflix. It is based on theBuzz Bissinger bookThe Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, which is about theMosquito Bowl game played duringWorld War II. The film will starNicholas Galitzine,Bill Skarsgård,Ray Nicholson, andTom Francis in the leading roles.
Four topAmerican football players enlist in theUnited States Marine Corps after theattack on Pearl Harbor. While preparing for thebattle of Okinawa, they play a football game, theMosquito Bowl, that later becomes famous.[1]
The film is based onBuzz Bissinger's 2022The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, which is about theMosquito Bowl.[4][5] WhileAmerican Primeval, also directed by Berg, was in post-production, a friend's son recommended that he make an adaption of the book during a dinner, following which Berg stated "everything just clicked".[6] Production for the film began in 2025.[3] The movie is directed byPeter Berg, and co-produced by Berg withFilm 44,Brian Grazer withImagine Entertainment, and Alex Gayner.[7] Berg and Grazer previously collaborated onFriday Night Lights (2004), another sports movie adaptation of Bissinger's work. Berg andMark L. Smith co-wrote the script, while Ezra Emanuel serves as the executive producer. Production of the movie was announced in April 2025, and will be distributed byNetflix.[1] The movie is anaction drama sports film.[7][1]
In late April 2025, it was announced that the actorsNicholas Galitzine andBill Skarsgård were cast in leading roles.[8] The film also starsRay Nicholson andTom Francis.[9][10] In July,Brent Comer joined the cast as George Murphy, a quarterback from theUniversity of Notre Dame.[11]Pat McAfee, a formerNFL player, will also appear as a drill instructor.[5][4]
The movie began filming in August 2025 inQueensland, Australia.[12][10] Berg praised the natural landscapes, calling it "cinematic gold" and "perfect" for the book's transition to a visual medium.[10] Scenes were also shot inRichard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium inProvidence, Rhode Island, for one day in November 2025.[13][14] By December 2025, filming had wrapped.[15]
The film is scheduled to release on Netflix in 2026.[7]
