The Leopard (Italian:Il gattopardo) is ahistorical drama television series based onGiuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's 1958 novelof the same name. Directed byTom Shankland,Giuseppe Capotondi, andLaura Luchetti, it is the second adaptation of the novel afterLuchino Visconti's1963 film. The series was released onNetflix on 5 March 2025.
The Prince of Salina and his aristocratic family in 19th centurySicily face the changing social landscape of theRisorgimento.

The series was announced on 6 May 2022, corresponding with the opening ofNetflix's Italian headquarters inRome.[1] It was allocated a budget of €40 million.[2]
Kim Rossi Stuart,Benedetta Porcaroli,Deva Cassel, andSaul Nanni were announced as cast members on 26 April 2023.[3] Both Nanni and Cassel expressed that they felt honored to reprise the roles ofAlain Delon andClaudia Cardinale, respectively.[4]
Principal photography began in April 2023.[5] Filming took place over 105 days and required the use of 5,000 extras; 130 carriages, carts, and boats; 100 animals; and 12 animal trainers.[2]
The series was shot on location inSicily, with specific filming locations includingPalermo,Catania, andSyracuse.[6] In Palermo, filming took place atPalazzo Comitini, theQuattro Canti,Palazzo delle Aquile, andVilla Valguarnera [it].[7] In and around Catania, filming took place atPalazzo Biscari and theCalanchi del Cannizzola [it].[8][9] In and around Syracuse, filming took place atPalazzo Beneventano del Bosco andSanta Lucìa alla Badìa, both on the island ofOrtygia.[7] Production designerDimitri Capuani [it] stated that the team specifically avoided locations used in the 1963 film adaptation to differentiate the series from the film.[10]
The series was also shot inTurin, specifically in theMuseum of the Risorgimento,Palazzo Carignano,Piazza Carignano [it],Parco del Valentino,Piazza Palazzo di Città [it],Palazzo Birago di Borgaro [it],Palazzo Cisterna [it],Palazzo Civico [it], Parco ai Caduti dei Lager Nazisti, and Via Carlo Alberto.[11] Interiors were also shot atVilla Parisi in Rome.[7]

A teaser trailer was released on 19 November 2024.[12] The series was released on Netflix on 5 March 2025.[13] Within five days of its release, the series had been viewed over 3 million times, making the Netflix Top 10 in over 30 countries.[14]
