The Illegal is a novel by Canadian writerLawrence Hill. It was published in 2015 by Harper-Collins.[1]
The novel's central character is Keita Ali, a marathon runner from the fictionalIndian Ocean nation of Zantoroland.[2] The story follows Ali as he desperately tries to save his only sibling, who has been kidnapped.
The novel won the 2016 edition ofCanada Reads, making Hill the first writer to win the competition twice.[3] Prior to its publication, the novel was optioned for film treatment byConquering Lion Pictures, the producers of the miniseries adaptation of Hill's prior novelThe Book of Negroes.[4]
The French translationLe Sans-papiers, byCarole Noël andMarianne Noël-Allen, was shortlisted for theGovernor General's Award for English to French translation at the2017 Governor General's Awards.
