The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2015 filmThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. The film is scored by the recurring franchise collaboratorJames Newton Howard. It was released on November 23, 2015 throughRepublic Records, complimenting Howard's original score and the song "Deep in the Meadow" performed byJennifer Lawrence that originally appeared in the predecessor,[1] and again re-appeared in the film's end credits.[2][3] In the album, it is accompanied by two suite pieces: "There Are Worse Games to Play" and theHunger Games suite as a medley.[4] A remixed version of the song, produced byBaauer was later unveiled separately.[5][6] Unlike the predecessors, there is no additional pop companion album inspired by the film.[7]
Filmtracks.com commented that Howard's music forThe Hunger Games series started with lament in thefirst instalment, drama inthe second and expanded to full action inthe third instalment, with the score forMockingjay – Part 2 "meanders between all three in this entry".[8] The review, although concerned with the highlights emulating Howard's score forThe Last Airbender (2010), complimented that it provides a "noble send-off" to the musical franchise giving four stars to the album.[8] Marcy Donelson ofAllMusic commented the score as "quietly tense, wistful, and explosive".[9]
Richard Lawson ofVanity Fair called the score as "alternately piercing and rousing",[10] while John Anderson ofTime called the score as "moody".[11] Peter Debruge ofVariety wrote Howard's score fluctuates from "soap-opera-style piano accents to full-blown action-movie bombast" while at moments becomes downright vital at the "film's claustrophobic sequence" where Katniss' squad battles head-to-head with the mutants at sewer system.[12]
