Before adopting the nameThe Holland Sentinel, it was calledThe Holland Evening Sentinel (1928–1977),[2] and before that theHolland Daily Sentinel.[3]

The paper was formerly owned byStauffer Communications, which was acquired byMorris Communications in 1994.[4] Morris sold the paper, along with 13 others, toGateHouse Media in 2007.[5] In 2019, GateHouse announced it was acquiring Gannett to become the country's largest newspaper chain in the United States.[6]
