The Fontenoy, also known asChelsea Hotel-West,[1] is a historic fourteen-story apartment complex located at 1811 North Whitley Avenue inHollywood, California inHollywood, California.

History

The Fontenoy was designed byLeland Bryant, the architect also responsible for the nearbyLe Trianon Apartments andSunset Towers, and built in 1929.[2] The building was bought by Calancorporation from Louis Mortimer in 1931.[3]

The Fontenoy was designatedLos Angeles Historic Cultural Monument #882 on July 25, 2007.[4] The building was a functioning apartment complex with no vacancies at the time of its nomination.[2]

Notable figures who've lived in The Fontenoy includeCrispin Glover,Nicolas Cage, andJohnny Depp.[1]

Architecture and design

The Fontenoy is square in plan and was built ofbrick withconcrete and brickcladding. It features aChateauesque design that includes anarched and centered entrance withlattice windows and decorativemolding. The roof ishipped, dutch-stylegable shaped, made ofslate tile, and features aroof ridge with aneon sign atop it. The building windows are made ofsteel.[1][2]

Inside, the building's entry lobby features rope ornateplaster work,trim, andmarble flooring.[2] Each floor contains four units (one per corner) or less on the higher floors, for a total of fifty units in the building.[1]

The building also contains a subterrenean parking garage and a yard with an oval-shaped pool.[1]
