Founded in 1855,The Express-Times began as The Easton Daily Express, a daily newspaper based inEaston, Pennsylvania. The newspaper provided national news and extensive local news coverage of theLehigh Valley region of easternPennsylvania.The Express-Times was the longest continuously published newspaper in the Lehigh Valley and one of thelongest continuously published newspapers in the nation.
The paper won awards inNew Jersey andPennsylvania.[1] In 2021, the newspaper was awarded aToner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting.[2][3]
The Express-Times was founded in 1855 asThe Easton Daily Express.
In 1917, the newspaper's name was changed toThe Easton Express and was later abbreviated toThe Express in 1973.
In 1983,Thomson Newspapers boughtThe Express. In 1991,The Express merged withThe Globe-Times, which was based inBethlehem, PA, which formedThe Express-Times. In 1994,MediaNews Group acquiredThe Express-Times from Thomson.
In 2000, current ownerAdvance Publications bought MediaNews'sNew Jersey andPennsylvania-based newspapers, includingThe Express-Times.[4]
In 2023,The Express-Times joined the region's other major newspaper,The Morning Call, in dropping their circulation of theDilbert comic afterScott Adams, the comic's creator, told white people to "get the hell away from [black people]" on aYouTube live stream in response to a public opinion poll by theconservative-leaningRasmussen Reports, which found that 26% of Black respondents disagreed with the statement thatit's okay to be white.[5][6]
The Express-Times discontinued its print edition in February 2025[7] but is available online atlehighvalleylive.com.[8]
The Express–Times published zoned editions in theLehigh Valley andNew Jersey. It delivered toLehigh andNorthampton Counties inPennsylvania andWarren andHunterdon Counties in northwest New Jersey.
