The Charleston Advisor (July 1999 – July 2024)[1] was apeer-reviewed publication that reviewed proprietary and free Internet resources that libraries license and make available to their patrons. The journal's tag line was "Critical reviews of web products for informational professionals."[2] It was published quarterly.[3]

Inspiration for the publication came fromKatina Strauch, then Head of Technical Services at the College of Charleston.[4] The publisher of the journal was Becky Lenzini, and the managing editor throughout its 25-year run was George Machovec.[3]

The journal has won aReaders' Choice Award.[5] It provided theccAdvisor online review facility with the magazineChoice.[6]

As of 2022[update]The Charleston Advisor was sold by The Charleston Company to science publisherAnnual Reviews.[4] The last issue ofThe Charleston Advisor, a retrospective from its 25 year history, was published 1 July 2024 as Volume 25, number 5.[7] Subscribers received permanent access rights to the archive of over 1,500 published articles.[8]

A new digital publication calledKatina was launched to succeedThe Charleston Advisor as of November 12, 2024.[9]Katina is named afterKatina Strauch, the founder of theCharleston Conference and the originator of the idea forThe Charleston Advisor.Katina will contain library resource reviews and other content relating to open access andlibrary and information science.[8][3]
