The Brownsville Herald is a newspaper based inBrownsville, Texas, United States, circulating in theCameron County area.

History

Jesse O. Wheeler, a newspaperman from Victoria,[3] purchased Brownsville'sCosmopolitan newspaper in 1892 and renamed it theBrownsville Herald. In early years, the paper voiced concern for the need of a railroad connection to the north and abridge to the nearby city ofMatamoros, Mexico.[4] A bridge opened in 1910.

It was owned byFreedom Communications until 2012, after Freedom filed for bankruptcy.[5] Its papers in Texas — theHerald,Odessa American,Valley Morning Star ofHarlingen,El Nuevo Heraldo,The Monitor ofMcAllen,The Mid Valley Town Crier ofWeslaco,Coastal Current ofSouth Padre Island, and a variety of other weekly and monthly publications — were sold toAIM Media Texas.[6]
