Testudinoidea is asuperfamily within the suborderCryptodira of the orderTestudines. It includes thepond turtles (Family: Emydidae),Asian turtles (Family: Geoemydidae), themonotypicbig-headed turtle (Family: Platysternidae), and thetortoises (Family: Testudinidae).
A 2021 study found the clade to be divided into two extant groups:Testuguria, containingGeoemydidae andTestudinidae; andEmysternia, containingEmydidae andPlatysternidae. The extinctLindholmemydidae, formerly classified in Testudinoidea, may fall outside the crown group of Testudinoidea, although there is not yet enough evidence for this.[2]
