TheTeso–Turkana (orAteker) languages are a group of closely relatedEastern Nilotic languages spoken in southeasternSouth Sudan, northeasternUganda, northwesternKenya, and southwesternEthiopia. In effect they form adialect cluster consisting of c.2 million people. According toGerrit Dimmendaal, most of these languages –Karimojong, Jie,Toposa,Turkana, andNyangatom – are mutually intelligible, and for the most part differ only in regard totone.[1]Teso belongs to the same broad group but is not described as being as closely related to Turkana as the others.
