"Tales" and "Return" not in the "Monkey Island series" group?

[edit]

In the "Monkey Island series" group, the code contains currently the following comment: "Please do not add Tales of Monkey Island to this template. It does not fall under this "classic" period of game development, but rather is considered a descendant game".

As requested, I have added "Return to Monkey Island" to the "Related" group, but I'm not sure that I follow fully the rationale reported above.

It seems that the intended purpose of this template is to focus on the era ofclassic LucasArts adventure games. Still, I find it very peculiar that a game like "Return", published by the same company and designed by Ron Gilbert shouldn't properly belong to the group "Monkey Island series" simply because it's a more recent game.

I'm leaving this comment here in case other editors would like to add their opinion on the matter. ►LowLevel73(talk)00:47, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure I'd agree with the rationale as specifically worded, butTales andReturn aren't developed in-house by LucasArts, so personally that'd be reason enough to differentiate them. Moreover, LucasArts adventure games occupy a specific influential place in gaming history, having pushed innovations such as theirphilosophy of no dead ends nor game overs, and I can see the point against retroactively adding games to the "canon" (especially in light of them being pretty much made by other studios).--LaukkuTheGreit (TalkContribs)07:52, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your explanation, it has helped. It's now my understanding that this template focuses on the historical and cultural phenomenon that took place in LucasArt during a specific period of time, when they designed and developed their adventure games in-house, contributing to define the genre.
This clarification leads to another doubt, though, which is whether to add this template to non-strictly-LucasArts articles.
For example, the article of the fan gameZak McKracken: Between Time and Space, mentioned in the template, contains this template. Does this usage suggest that it would make sense to use the template also in theReturn to Monkey Island article, considering that it picks up whereRevenge left off and it's designed by the same person (and it's also definitely more "official" than a fan game)? ►LowLevel73(talk)05:35, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
