Regions

[edit]

The regions portion of the template needs to be fixed, because it does not reflect all the regions of the city. For example, it lists a San Fernando Valley region, catering the erroneous view that all of what is called "the Valley" is in the San Fernando Valley when in reality there are parts that are instead in the Crescenta Valley. Likewise, there are regions not included in this template such as Los Feliz & Silverlake or Echo Park & Westlake. --Daniel Romero Cruz17:29, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Districts and Neighborhoods section

[edit]

We need to do something about the gigantic Districts and Neighborhoods section of this template. That alone takes up more than half a page, maybe even a whole page. It is so large, its navigation function becomes more difficult. I would support creating separate "districts and neighborhoods" templates for each major region of the city, such as Hollywood, the harbor area, downtown, the valley, etc., just as is done in thePhiladelphia neighborhood articles and others. A link toList of districts and neighborhoods of Los Angeles would remain in this template. I have created an example atUser:Szyslak/Hollywood.

If there are no serious objections, I'll go ahead and create the separate templates, along with the dirty work of adding them to each article.szyslak00:54, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That has actually been on my to-do list for several months. However, I have been debating about whether to implement a style similar to what is described onWikipedia:WikiProject Football/Templates#Navigational boxes (navboxes) — having both the main LA template and the seperate neighborhood template placed on any page without having to have them as separate boxes. The list ofHarbor Area districts is on only one line, and I think it is a little silly to have it in a seperate box.Zzyzx11(Talk)01:54, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We could do that, but there'd only be two templates on every neighborhood page, whereas the football/soccer pages could easily have boxes cluttering the page without such a system.szyslak02:38, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've made quite a few changes tothe templates, expanding their scope beyond a mere list of neighborhoods. What do you think?szyslak06:20, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have something different in mind for the San Fernando Valley articles because the Valley is a whole separate region with important independent cities. A "Valley" template that excludes Burbank and Glendale would be silly. SeeUser:Szyslak/San Fernando Valley.szyslak 02:38, 16 June 2007 (UTC) n.b. I now plan to make the Valley template like all the others.szyslak06:20, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your proposed San Fernando Valley template, why do I get thatstrange feeling of aslippery slope ... I sense there is going to be an explosion of numerous navigation boxes on these articles. We already haveTemplate:Los Angeles County, California, and it is only a matter of time before someone comes along and createsTemplate:Greater Los Angeles Area which would be similar toTemplate:SF Bay Area andTemplate:Chicagoland :-)Zzyzx11(Talk)02:50, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I'll just make the Valley navbox like the others, and limited to LA neighborhoods. The point of this is to mitigate template creep, not to cause more of it.szyslak03:29, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: It looks like the current convention is to omit the names of elected officials from city navigational templates, at least for cities in the United States. (SeeTemplate:New York City,Template:Chicago,Template:Baltimore, etc.) If you think this shouldn't be the case, I encourage you to bring this up onWikipedia talk:WikiProject Cities, and only make such changes ifconsensus emerges there to do so. --SamX06:12, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
