Template revisions

[edit]

I've taken the liberty of revising the Dylan template you created a little while ago; it would have taken me longer to describe the changes I'd have suggested than to actually make them. The big change is to sort out the "standard" live albums separately -- the original version had several in the "albums" section, others in the "bootleg/live" section. Having gone that far, I then gave the "Bootleg Series" releases their own section; that's an intuitive call, and if it bothers you, just knock it back. Finally, klutz that I am, I can't figure out why my changes make the closing bracket visible, and nothing I've tried fixes it -- could you tell me what I've done wrong?Monicasdude19:03, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I really liked you changes, I thought about making similar changes myself but didn't quite now how to do them - so I'm really glad that you did! I did some changes to the Bootleg Series, not showing the full title in the template. This was just an intuitive call from me, so if you relly don't like the changes it's just to revert them (I did them to make the template smaller a little bit smaller).

Revision

[edit]

Why does it no longer list albums and such like in the box, that was much easier to use, instead of having to navigate through various screens you could just click on what you wanted.

I was just wondering the same thing. It is rather inconvenient and don't match with other similar templates (such asThe Beatles and other groups). If unless someone can give an explain this pretty quickly I am going to change it back.Datapharmer05:43, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well Done, I would change it but I have no idea how!
All of these large templates are being revised, because they are too large and take over the page. The template should not list individual albums (the Beatles one does not do this); it should be short and small. --FuriousFreddy12:55, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

65 Revisited

[edit]

Another contributor added the film65 Revisited to the Bob Dylan nav template today. It showed as a red link. I did a bit of reading (found some reviews on the web), and then wrote a shortarticle. It's real rough; please feel free to expand and improve.Hult041956 (talk)00:48, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Never Ending Tour dates

[edit]

Do we really need to list every year of the NET? I think one link toNever Ending Tour would be enough; that page lists all the individual years anyway. The Wookieepedian (talk)16:39, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Compilations

[edit]

To editors who keep moving the 1973Dylan album andThe Basement Tapes back into studio albums: they are compilations; you can find this fact detailed in just aboutany Dylan source book, biography, or critical discography.PJtP (talk)00:46, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree,Dylan andThe Basement Tapes are clearlycompilation albums by Wikipedia's own definition of a compilation album and are recognized as such byExpecting Rain's discography.

A studio album is a collection of songs recorded in a room set up for recordings. Generally not all recordings are chosen for the album, which would, by the definitions used here, make nearly every album released a compilation album. I have noted this discussion on the project page for further discussion. Menawhile I have reverted all changes made on this 5 year old unresolved discussion. --Richhoncho (talk)10:04, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Compilation albums are usually compilations of songs already released. The songs onThe Basement Tapes andDylan are the first releases of those songs.
Compilation album is not a WP: rule or guideline, its an article and and thus unreliable -- and in fact it starts with "A compilation album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one performer or by several performers" which means that all or many studio albums are compilation albums (depending on what is meant by "separate recordings") which is false. But, it then goes on to give examples of compilation albums: greatest hits; box sets; tribute albums; singles albums; and other types, none of which apply to The Basement Tapes or Dylan. (also FWIW the albums' articles don't describe or treat them as compilation albums.)
It is true that The Basement Tapes sat in the vaults and songs did circulate on bootlegs first, but bootlegs aren't releases. It is true that Dylan is made of unreleased songs from two sessions a year apart for two other albums, but so? I see the points but IMO they're weak.
Expecting Rain's discography 404's, but even so it's one random guy's opinion I suppose... it's a fansite, looks to be reader posts, news links, and so on... that url does point to "/discussions/"... and a fan can be an expert on Bob Dylan without being an expert on what the definition of "compilation album" is.
Are we going to have to have an RfC on this. I want it explained to me why it is helpful to the reader to tell her thatDylan is more like a greatest hits album than a normal release.
Also, the two albums are listed twice, as compilation albums and studio albums. That's sloppy and not OK. Also, even if they were compilation, they're not "themed", as we call them (neither isBlues, despite the title) -- what's the theme?Herostratus (talk)06:14, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
