Usage

This{{WikiProject United States}} project banner template should be added (notsubst:ed) to the talk page of articles within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. This template automatically adds articles toCategory:WikiProject United States articles. The full syntax is as follows and§ Aliases are listed below:

Instructions

General parameters

class – valid values are fa, a, ga, b, c, start, stub, fl, list, na (case-insensitive). See the project'squality scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave|class= blank or omit the parameter.
importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project'simportance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave|importance= blank or omit the parameter.
attention – set|attention=yes if the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.

needs-geocoord – set|needs-geocoord=yes if the article needs geocoordinate data.
- This parameter populatesCategory:United States articles missing geocoordinate data.
needs-image – set|needs-image=yes if the article needs an image or photograph.
- This parameter populatesCategory:Wikipedia requested photographs in the United States.
- image-details – (appears only if|needs-image=yes) Additional details to describe the image that is requested.
- image-in – Used in conjunction with the|needs-image=yes parameter to place the image request into a specific location, such as in the state, city or county in the United States. For example,"image-in=New York City" will place the article talk page intoCategory:Wikipedia requested photographs in New York City. Leave blank or delete, if not.
needs-infobox – set|needs-infobox=yes if the article needs aninfobox. Remember that infoboxes are not suitable for all articles, and can overwhelm short articles.
- This parameter populatesCategory:United States articles needing infoboxes.
needs-map – set|needs-map=yes if the article needs a map.
- This parameter populatesCategory:Wikipedia requested maps in the United States.
- map-details – (appears only if|needs-map=yes) Additional details to specify the kind of map information that is needed.
- map-in – Used in conjunction with the|needs-map=yes parameter to place the image request into a specific location, such as in the state, city or county in the United States. For example,"map-in=New York City" will place the article talk page intoCategory:Wikipedia requested maps in New York City. Leave blank or delete, if not.

past-collaboration – set|past-collaboration=yes (or any non-blank value other than "no", "n", "0" or "¬", such as the dates it was part of the collaboration) if the page was a pastproject collaboration.
- This parameter populatesCategory:Past U.S. collaborations of the Month.
unref – set|unref=yes if the article needs inline citations and references.
- This parameter populatesCategory:Unreferenced United States articles.
auto – This parameter is for the use ofbots and indicates that the article has beenautomatically rated:
- |auto=length – based on the length of the article
- |auto=inherit – because one or more other projects use this class
- |auto=yes (or|auto=stub), in conjunction with|class=stub – as Stub-Class because it uses astub template
  - Use of the above values (or value combinations) with this parameter populatesCategory:Automatically assessed United States articles.
category – set|category=no if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of theDEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Abraham Lincoln, use|listas=Lincoln, Abraham so that the talk page will show up in the L's and not the A's of the various assessment and administrative categories; similarly, for topics with titles beginning with anarticle such as "the" or "a" - e.g. for The Yards (Washington, D.C.), use|listas=Yards (Washington, D.C.), The so that the talk page will show up in the Y's). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. For more information about this, please seeWikipedia:Categorization of people § Ordering names in a category.
If the article is using{{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add|listas= to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required.

Listings being with "The"; e.g.The 13th Regional Corporation, would belistas=13th Regional Corporation, The.
Listings being with "List of", would belistas=Bridges in the United States, List of andlistas=Botanical gardens in the United States, List of.
Proper names; e.g. George Washington, would belistas=Washington, George

Portals

portalX-name – if the article has been selected for use on a portal, the name of that portal. The name should be given without any formatting or namespace prefixes; thus,Portal:United States is given as|portal1-name=United States. Up to five different portals may be specified, via the parametersportal1-name throughportal5-name.
portalX-link – the portal subpage location where the article may be found on the corresponding portal. This should be given as a pure unlinked subpage name; thus,Portal:United States/Selected article/21 is given as|portal1-link=Selected article/21.
