Teleocichla is agenus offish in thefamilyCichlidae found in theTapajós,Xingu,Tocantins andJari River basins, which are part of theAmazon River Basin inBrazil. All species arerheophilic, and highly elongated in shape.[1] They generally are smaller than 9 cm (3.5 in) in length,[2] making them some of the smallest cichlids of theAmericas. OnlyT. preta can grow larger, reaching about 12 cm (4.7 in).[3] Since restricted to areas with fast currents (such as cataracts and rapids), they are particularly vulnerable to the building of dams,[3] and theBelo Monte Dam may cause the extinction ofT. centisquama.[4] Other species recognized asthreatened by Brazil'sMinistry of the Environment areT. cinderella,T. prionogenys andT. wajapi.[5]
